The 24-mile jump from spaceFeliz Baumgartner,
also known as Fearless Felix, is an Austrian man who became the first person to
break the speed of sound in freefall by jumping from the edge of space, a
24-mile jump.
Baumgartner's
career spanned nearly two decades before he started training for this most
daring skydive of all. He was afraid of the challenge and not necessarily of the
magnitude of the dive, but rather of the outfit he had to wear to travel
through space.
The
skydiver was terrified of wearing a pressurized space suit that restricted his
movements. Including his mother and his girlfriend, everyone knew about his
fear, which can happen when you travel at such a high speed. To overcome his
fear, Felix sought psychiatric help from a sports psychologist. When he finally
stood high above the Earth in the helium balloon, he looked like a solitary and
vulnerable figure. There was every chance he could be falling into oblivion.
However, Felix managed to stabilize himself and fulfill his dream. Baumgartner
has plummeted through 24 miles of cold, dark space at a speed of 843.6 miles
per hour, a feat included in The Guinness Book of Records.
