Task 2A. Read the text and answer the questions.
Customs areas are the physical locations, such as ports and airports, where Customs officers carry out their duties. These duties include Duty collection, Classification and Appraisement of imported goods, Passenger inspection and Cargo inspection, export control and investigation of Smuggling and other Customs offences.Duty collection is the process by which Customs collects import duties on foreign goods brought into the country. Classification is the process of determining the correct category or class in which a product should be placed for purposes of duty assessment. Appraisement is the process of determining the value of goods for purposes of assessing import duties. This is done using various methods, including comparing prices with similar products in the market, using the transaction value (the actual price paid for the goods) and referring to valuation databases.Passenger inspection is the process of examining passengers' luggage and personal effects to ensure that they are not carrying any prohibited or restricted items and to assess whether any duty needs to be paid on the items being brought into the country. Cargo inspection is the process of examining shipments of goods to ensure that they match the description on the shipping documents and to check for any illegal or prohibited items.Customs areas may also include Free trade zones, which are designated areas within a country where goods can be imported, stored, processed and re-exported without being subject to import duties or other taxes. These zones are often located near ports or airports and are used to promote international trade and attract foreign investment.Another feature of Customs areas is Bonded warehouses. These are secure facilities where imported goods can be stored temporarily without having to pay import duties or other taxes. Bonded warehouses are often used when the importer does not have the necessary permits or licenses to sell the goods immediately or when the goods are awaiting further processing or distribution.
