Instability is a challenge for a lot of modern families nowadays. The
traditional family was a stable type of family whose dissolution was rarely
thought of and was not very easy. It faced the world as a unit. Women outside
the family had no refuge. The family used to have one and the same profession which was
continued by succeeding generations. Social mobility was slight.
But today the situation has changed. The control of the family
over its members has decreased. The younger generation does not like any
interference by their elders. There is lack of unity among the family members.
Faith in one another is decreasing.
The
problems of working women have hindered children's development and
increased conflicts between husband and wife. There is lack of mutual trust.
The marriage bonds have weakened. The ancient ideal of fidelity in
sex-relationship has been adversely affected.
There
is no longer any family craft or profession. The members of the same family are
engaged in different pursuits, one is in service, another is in business, the other is in politics. Members of the modern family take more interest outside the
family. They have dinner in restaurants and spend their nights in
clubs and return home for a very short period. To women marriage is not the
only meaning of life. They work in factories and offices and earn much to be independent.
There has never been so many divorces as we can see nowadays. It should also be noted that the divorce rates do not
include cases of broken families. If we take into account family discords, discretion and separation which are not followed by divorce we will see that family instability is increasing.
