They say that art is good for the soul – something those running
volunteer projects in one of Rio de Janeiro’s poorest communities
are strong believers in. The favela (shanty town) of Complexo do
Alemão hosts an important not-for-profit art program where, with the
help of international volunteers, local youth can escape from the
reality of poverty and immerse themselves
in art as a form of creative expression. Experienced
artists, and other artists alike, are encouraged to share their
knowledge and techniques with local youth in the region and help make
a true difference to their lives.

Brazil is a country of extremes – one of which is the extreme
difference in the economic equality of its residents. This is nowhere
clearer than in Rio de Janerio, a city of beauty and economic
prosperity, and abject poverty and societal discord. This
ever-increasing gap between
rich and poor is disproportionately affecting youth, with child
labour rates higher than any other country in Latin America. The need
for poverty alleviation programs to help those most vulnerable
is essential, and only feasible with the help of volunteers.
The work of non-profit non-governmental agencies to bring these
programs to those who need it most is invaluable, imparting those on
the outer reaches of society with important skills and life changing
experiences.

everyday life”, and when youth are surrounded by poverty and the
social effects of this, art and creativity can make a real difference
to people’s lives. Art offers a platform to escape from reality and
the hardships of everyday life, while also teaching skills
that can positively impact futures.The
vibrant creative arts program in the heart of Rio de Janiero’s
Complexo do Alemão favela was created with the goal of teaching a
creative outlet to youth most in need. Having the opportunity to
learn art techniques and immerse
themselves in creative activity is a luxury many youths in the
favela simply would never have had the opportunity to enjoy. .
The program is widely viewed as a vehicle which keeps youth engaged
when not in school and involving them in positive activities where
they have the ability to practice freedom of expression.

While this volunteer program is social, fun and community-based,
its importance to the community is intrinsic. Research shows
that exposure to art can help youth develop many positive skills and
abilities (such as developing their memory and ability to focus), and
can ultimately improve youths’ confidence and academic performance.
The benefits to those from low socio-economic backgrounds and at-risk
youth are even higher. Art exposure can be instrumental in resolving
conflicts, deterring problems with attendance and disruptive
behaviour, and building self-respect, resilience,
empathy and collaborative skills. By teaching youth creative skills
and allowing them the freedom to express themselves, volunteers are
imparting these youth with the skills to help them towards a
happier, more fulfilling life.

Complexo do Alemão, volunteers in this program are helping to
shape lives. While also offering the practical element of making
the community a more vibrant place to live, and sharing skills to
allow others to do the same, this program serves an even higher
purpose. The positive outcomes to youth from assisting them to tap
into their creativity
and benefit from the many abilities art aids them with, are
immeasurable. Most importantly, it helps to feed the soul of those
most disaffected in society. This project is a
wonderful way to make a real difference to how youth in this
community see themselves and their future prospects. It is a truly
life-changing opportunity to get involved in a way that will benefit
youth for the rest of their lives and open up a whole new creative
world to their eyes.
